WHAT ARE SKIN LESIONS?
Skin lesions may include a variety of concerns: skin cancers, moles, skin tags, cysts, birthmarks, etc. The surgical removal of skin lesions is frequently performed by plastic surgeons, especially when the area involves the face, neck or hands. Because certain skin lesions will not disappear spontaneously, surgical removal is a treatment option. There are many different techniques for removing skin lesions. Your doctor will discuss the various surgical procedures involved in the removal of skin lesions.
IS SURGICAL REMOVAL RIGHT FOR ME?
Every surgical procedure involves a certain amount of risk and it is important that you understand these risks and the possible complications associated with them. In addition, every procedure has limitations. An individual's choice to undergo a surgical procedure is based on the comparison of the risk to potential benefit. Although the majority of patients do not experience complications, you should discuss them with your plastic surgeon to make sure you understand all possible consequences of surgical revision of scars.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT RIGHT AFTER TREATMENT?
Sutures are normally removed within 4-14 days after surgery. Most patients return to non- strenuous work 7-10 days following surgery. Strenuous activities can be resumed at approximately 3 weeks after surgery. Swelling, bruising and soreness could take up to several weeks to dissipate.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT OVER TIME?
Over time, patients should avoid direct exposure of your incision to tanning beds or sunlight for one year after surgery. Apply SPF of 45 or higher to area or cover when exposed to sun. |
