Breast size, shape and balance is important to many women. Breast enlargement (or breast augmentation) improves the balance in a woman's figure and can enhance her self-image, confidence, and how she appears to others.
WHAT IS A BREAST AUGMENTATION?
Breast augmentation is the surgical placement of breast implants to increase fullness and projection of the breast or to improve symmetry to the breasts. The procedure is used cosmetically to: ~ enlarge a naturally small breast, most commonly the result of heredity ~ restore breast volume lost following pregnancy, as a result of breast-feeding or due to weight loss ~ achieve better symmetry, when breasts are moderately disproportionate in size and shape.
Breast augmentation requires surgical placement of breast implants to enhance breast size.
The most common incisions include one near the crease under the breast, in the underarm area or the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple. Through the incision, a pocket is created either directly behind the breast tissue or beneath the pectoral muscle and on top of the chest wall. It is in this pocket where the implant will be placed.
Breast lifts are regularly performed in conjunction with breast augmentations since breast augmentation does not correct sagging breasts. In cases where a woman desires to enhance breast fullness and at the same time improve the position and shape of sagging breasts, breast lifts are recommended.
WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS FOR IMPLANTS?
Each patient has different needs, so our surgeons address your specific needs during the consultation. Women who are considering breast augmentation have a choice between saline or silicone (gel) implants. There are several differences between the two implants. Saline is less expensive, and if the implant leaks, the body will absorb the saline. However, if you do not want silicone in your body, you should note that there really is no such thing as a silicone-free implant, as the implant pouch for saline implants is made from silicone. Silicone implants feel more natural than saline, which is the main advantage of silicone. However, it can be more difficult to detect leaks in these implants because of the cohesive nature of silicone gel. Years ago, silicone breast implants raised a red flag in the media. However, recent studies have offered reassurance about the safety of this procedure with silicone implants.
Pregnancy, weight loss and menopause may influence the appearance of augmented breasts over the course of a woman's lifetime. Breast augmentation requires maintenance over time, including regular examinations for breast health and to evaluate the condition of your implants. Implants are not guaranteed to last a lifetime and future surgery may be required to replace one or both implants.
IS BREAST AUGMENTATION RIGHT FOR ME?
Breast augmentation is a very popular procedure. In the past several years over 600,000 women have had breast augmentation in the United States alone. If you are an adult woman of any age wishing for full breast development, have a personal desire to enhance your breasts (not a spouse or significant other’s desire), are healthy and without a life threatening illness or medical condition that can impair healing, are a non-smoker, have no immediate plans for massive weight loss, and have a positive outlook and specific goals in mind for improving your body image, then a breast augmentation may be right for you!
WHAT RESULTS SHOULD I EXPECT RIGHT AFTER SURGERY?
Initial healing may include swelling and discomfort at the incision sites and in breast tissue overall. Discomfort is common and can be controlled with medication. A support bra may be recommended around the clock for the first week or two. It is important to follow all post-operative instructions carefully as this is essential to the success of your outcome. A return to light, normal activity is possible as soon as you feel ready, sometimes within a day or two after surgery.
Initial wound healing may take 5-10 days. You should be ready to return to work and normal activity at this time, IF you feel comfortable, AND so long as you do not engage in any heavy lifting or vigorous exercise. Intimate contact with breasts may resume when healing is more fully complete, usually within 4-6 weeks. Healing will continue for several weeks as swelling resolves, implant position settles and incision lines continue to refine. Incision lines are permanent, although inconspicuously located.
WHAT RESULTS SHOULD I EXPECT OVER TIME?
The results of breast augmentations are immediately visible. Final results appear gradually over several weeks as swelling resolves and breast size and shape settles. Incision lines typically will fade over the first year, but again, are considered permanent.
Breast augmentations unfortunately do not stop time, so your breasts can change due to aging, weight fluctuations, hormonal factors and gravity. However, your enhanced breast contour and the freedom to wear the clothes you enjoy without the need for padded bras may bring you added self-confidence.
